5 Web Design Trends for 2016

Web design thrives equally upon two parts: innovation and imitation. In other words, we all like to seize upon the latest and greatest trends and techniques, use them until they’re ubiquitous, and start looking for the next big thing. The first part of the year is the perfect time to start searching for such addendums, so let’s explore the techniques that will make a big splash in the latter half of this decade.

1. The ‘Hamburger’ menu

Some people love it others hate it, one thing is for certain is that this has become easily recognisable due to its widespread use.

2. Long scrolling websites

Placing all your important elements at the top of your homepage is now a well-known myth. Thanks to smartphones almost everyone is accustomed to long scrolls. The technique works especially well for sites that want to guide users through storytelling, and you can still mimic a multi-page site by breaking the scroll into clear sections.

3. Card Layouts

Pioneered by Pinterest and now more so with Google Now, Android Lollipop and Marshmallow, cards are everywhere on the web because they present information in bite-sized chunks perfect for quick reading.

4. Less stock images more in house photography

We’re starting to see more and more websites avoid the use of stock images and instead use more in house photography over something that feels much more designed and personal to the site itself. There is no doubt that using real images to show off your product/service offers a more bespoke look to a website.

5. Material design takes off

We mentioned this in our Top 3 Web Design Trends 2015  post but the adoption has been a bit slow. However, designers now have a better understanding of Material design and we anticipate they will start opting to use it more in their designs as documentation and examples become more widespread in 2016.

3 Design Trends influencing web design in 2015

Line Icons and Ghost Buttons

Ghost buttons are making a big impact with both designers and online visitors. Ghost buttons are described as “empty” and “hollow.” They are bordered by the thin line with plain text (in sans serif) inside them to encourage website visitors to click the button and take them to an offer or a landing page.

The buttons/icons are simple aestheticaly which appear lighter and act as support to larger full width and more colourful photography or design illustrations. They also compliment the flat, and now material, design styles that is ever growing in popularity.

They also have become integral to the flat interface style that has grown popular in the past few years.

They appear as if they are transparent, which explains the ghost name, and do not overly standout, but still prove to be effective calls to action and grab website visitors attention due to their simple minimalist appearance. That is why web designers, seo experts and client love them!

Google used ghost buttons to allow for an uninterrupted image of the tablet product in use. This design takes the focus away from the text, and focuses on the Google tablet being used by the young child.

The example below from Verbal & Visual used a filtered image to bring more attention to the light text and action button, which looks as if it has risen above the image.

These combinations of techniques helps to draw site visitors straight to the content you want them to see.

Material Design

In 2014, Google published the material design specification with a goal to provide guidelines for good design and beautiful UI across all device form factors. In 2015 we have seen this design philosophy move onto Android mobile and table devices.

Below you can see an example of material design in Google’s messenger app.

Full Screen Video

Video has always been an important tool in communicating with web visitors. It especially works well when designing websites for bands, luxury brands, fashion shows, advertising campaigns or film and TV.

Apple used this to great effect with the launch of the new Apple Watch.

Is your website Mobile Friendly for Google’s mobile algorithm change?

Since the increase of smartphone sales over the last 5 years more and more people are now browsing the web on smaller mobile devices. Having a smartphone with internet browser/search engine at our fingertips has revolutionised the way we live our lives. It’s now possible to find new shops and restaurants while on the move, find and buy products, book holidays, cinema tickets, spa days, taxis – all while waiting for a train or a friend. And it’s showing no sign of slowing down.

Google Office

Web design changes needed

In response to this Google have changed its search algorithm to reward sites that are mobile optimised.

This is one of the biggest changes to the Google algorithm in years, so it’s one to take seriously. A site’s “mobile friendliness” will now play a key role in the way it is ranked, and sites that are not mobile optimised will appear lower down on Google’s search pages. So its vital for your web designer to incorporate these changes into your company website.

With mobile search growing at 10x the rate of desktop, businesses that don’t have mobile ready site stand to lose up to 1/3rd of their traffic. This could have a massive impact on the performance of your business.

The algorithm will scan each page on the site, checking for load times, responsive design elements, and mobile best practice. For now searches on tablets won’t be affected, but this is likely to be in the pipeline – so it’s worth getting ahead of this change.

Google has provided a simple way to check to see if your website is ‘Mobile Friendly with their  Google Mobile Friendly Test. Take a look and see if your website is ready or if you need a re-design of your website.

Google changes to mobile search

Today Google are updating the algorithms that display URLs in the search results to better reflect the names of websites, using the real-world name of the site instead of the domain name, and the URL structure of the sites in a breadcrumbs-like format.

Structured data site names and URLs

In addition, Google is providing support for schema.org structured data for Websites to signal to the algorithms how to substitute Website names for domain names, and the URL structure as breadcrumbs.

For more details and code examples, Google has made available its documentation for site names and breadcrumbs to help web designers

Although initially announced to come into effect in the USA today expect a worldwide roll out soon, so expect more websites to incorporate breadcrumbs in their web design.

Developers will need to take all this into account when designing websites for their clients.
